Patterns and Times Tables

Patterns are an important part of the game of maths.

Here is a pattern formed by repeating the same number.

or using holders

for more consistency we could put a holder on the one Seven at the start.

All of the above would result in the same number of black counters on the board.

In each holder the Seven card appears a number of times and a collection of cards as above is the Seven times table.

Playing results in and you can count the black counters and you probably know there are 42 of them but why the name forty two?

We will be getting a lot of large numbers using times tables. Let us step back a bit and look at dealing with a large number of counters on the board and finding names for them.
